We have been alerted by a number of new and approved suppliers that unfortunately a fraudster is requesting quotations (see example below) with the intention to order goods using the e-mail addresses v.m.john@gre-edu.co.uk, and v.m.john@netscape.com, and in some instances quoting the University’s Barclays Account details to support his authenticity; the fraudster is requesting that he is contacted using the Mobile number +44 (7) 0319 83789, or +44 (7) 0240 89890, both of which happen to be high Premium lines and could prove very costly to the caller. Some suppliers have confirmed that the scammer has also targeted other Universities over the last few weeks.
We have therefore taken the following steps:
- Informed all suppliers on the University’s In-Tend database of the scam to avoid or at least minimise the possibility of goods being supplied to the fraudster.
- Communicated with Tucows domain managers, whose Legal Officer is dealing with the e e-mail addresses which were set up in Fortworth, Texas, USA;
- Trace the scammer’s delivery address as a fictitious “Greenwich London Division Centre” in London E6 or Greenwich Surrey Division Centre, Access House, 141 Morden Road, Mitchum, Surrey CR4 4DG;
- Provided to the Metropolitan Police Action Fraud squad with details of the scam.
You are strongly advised as follows:
- Do NOT process any documents, particularly requests for quotes or invoices containing the addresses v.m.john@gre-edu.co.uk and v.m.john@netscape.com or any similar suspicious e-mails;
- Do NOT call any of the above premium mobile numbers;
- Only accept Purchase Orders for goods, service and works requirements via the University’s Parabilis e-Procurement system; and
- Forward all communications regarding the above or any other scam to procurement-team@gre.ac.uk. If you have not already done so, which I will provide to the Police Action Fraud squad;
- Forward this e-mail to your trade association or Chamber of Commerce requesting that they inform their members of the fraudulent practice.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused by the fraudster.
Kind regards.
